Merseyside’s Museums and Galleries – CLOSED!!!!
Well, not quite, but they are certainly not open when I have the opportunity to visit them.
Most of our museums and galleries close at 5-00pm or 5-30pm. If you are at work you only have Saturday or Sunday to see our world class art collection. Wouldn’t it be great to take the kids to The Walker or the Lady Lever on a summers evening after school? Go for an evening meal in the Maritime Dining Rooms in the Maritime Museum? Forget it, it closes at 4-00pm!
In this age of budget cuts the museums and galleries need to attract bigger audiences. Working people should have more access to the great collections we have, not just at weekends. An added benefit of later opening is that it would create a different and better atmosphere in the city centre.
Cultural activities attract a better class of hooligan into our city centre.
Those who have participated in the late opening events that the likes of the Tate and the Walker hold a couple of times a year will testify to this. The city is filled not with hen parties or teams of drunken young men but with families and art lovers who bring with them a more civillized form of party. The museums become the new night clubs for a short time.
This should happen once a week during the summer months particularly bringing a happier feel to the city centre and allowing those of us who are at work to enjoy the cities fantastic art, music and buildings.
