Liverpool Cruises to Success……
The joy of being invited to the launch of the new Liverpool Cruise Terminal turnaround facility at the Pier Head, was an occasion I simply could not pass up on. The reception was hosted by our new Mayor of Liverpool, Joe Anderson at the Malmaison Hotel, Princes Dock where guests were presented with some of the many individuals who have worked tirelessly to achieve such an historical event. Judith Feather- Divisional Manager Events/Cultural Infrastructure from Culture Liverpool along with Chris Coates, Commercial Manager- Cruise and Maritime Voyages (CMV) were just some of the key players who spoke at the reception to a packed audience. From the Malmaison Hotel, guests were escorted over to the cruise liner berth where the Ocean Countess liner was docked. People in their droves lined all available vantage points along the Princes Dock baked in glorious sunshine, with hundreds of delighted passengers on board the Ocean Countess waving their Jubilee flags to the crowds below. They came to wave them off on their trip to Scotland.
This amazing day was very poignant for me, not only did you feel so proud to be part of this remarkable accomplishment for this great City of Liverpool, and the many dignitaries in attendance exemplified and celebrated the very essence of the River Mersey with its wonderful rich nautical history.
At one point during the musical celebrations and speeches on the quayside, I took a trip down memory lane to recall my first glimpse of the Liverpool skyline in the early 6o’s. Sailing into the port of Liverpool as a child on a Portuguese registered passenger ship with my father. We had left the Caribbean Seas to start a new life with my Mother and my siblings was such an extraordinary adventure for me. Who would have imagined after so many years on, that state of the arts Cruise Ships with a new generation of passengers will actually begin and end their journey right here in Liverpool. What a remarkable Coup for Liverpool!!
