Heritage Blues Orchestra-Liverpool Philharmonic Hall

I went along to the “HBO” concert on Friday (1st Feb) evening, with no preconceived expectation of this Grammy Award nominated Jazz/Blues fusion group.  My love of Jazz in general, was indeed a factor that drew me into the Philharmonic Hall, with its superb acoustics facilities.

The Heritage Blues Orchestra came on stage,  led by the main vocalists  namely Bill Simms Jr, his daughter Chaney Sims and Junior Mack. Along with fellow musicians Kenny “Buddy Eyes”Smith a very cool drummer, Vincent Butcher an amazing harmonica player, Bruno Wilhelm a serious saxophonist along with four other musicians from France, and other european countries whose names deserves equal mention, but passed over my head during their introduction.  That is when I started looking for a copy of the programme, but alas none were available on the night.

The mastery and the delivery of this rich, soulful, eclectic sound took you back to a time where music and singing captured the essence of the field work songs of the Southern States of America.  The fusion of African-American musical heritage,  along with the influence of the rhythms of  New Orleans was simply captivating .

Bill Simms Jr’s  voice had that  rich deep velvet tone crafted over many years, his daughter Chaney Simms complimented both her father and  Junior Mack with her expressive interpretation of songs such a “Get Right Church”.  Junior Mack’s voice was that  of smooth mellow molasses –  together they delivered such effortless, harmonious, melodic and at times haunting vocals.

A truly enjoyable,  foot stomping, feel good concert was my verdict. I did however leave the Philharmonic Hall wondering why such a superb New York based group,  was only on stage from 8pm till 9.30pm?  Maybe that old adage “Less is More” applied on the night……

Only one thing to remedy this – the Heritage Blues Orchestra must grace us with their presence again very soon!
